The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) hosted an exploratory meeting to examine the need for a potential ANSI Energy Efficiency Standards Panel, and to hear directly from stakeholders what shape such an activity should take. The purpose of the meeting was to gather input from stakeholders as to areas where an ANSI standards panel would be most beneficial in coordinating a U.S. approach to energy efficiency standardization activities.

ANSI Hosts NSTC Standards Subcommittee Leaders - 04-13-10
|
On April 13, 2010, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) hosted an open meeting with leaders of the White House’s newly formed National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Subcommittee on Standards: Aneesh Chopra, U.S. Chief Technology Officer; Pat Gallagher, Director, National Institute of Standards and Technology; and Phil Weiser, Senior Advisor to the National Economic Council Director for Technology and Innovation. The meeting provided the opportunity for the standardization community to hear about the NSTC initiative first hand from the individuals spearheading the effort.
The meeting was held during ANSI’s Company Member Forum at the Consumer Electronics Association in Arlington, Virginia, and was attended by over 60 in-person participants and nearly 100 via webinar.
Mr. Chopra, Dr. Gallagher, and Mr. Weiser offered several key points on the nature of this new subcommittee and its specific strategy and goals. Specifically, the NSTC Subcommittee on Standards will:
1) Make the government a more effective partner with private sector on standardization activities
2) Raise awareness within government agencies and lift the level of sophistication for meaningful government participation in standards development
3) Be focused on continued results and feedback rather than a single report
A brief question-and-answer session followed the remarks.

On March 31, 2010, ANSI and the Internet Security Alliance (ISA) held a press conference to launch their new publication, "The Financial Management of Cyber Risk: An Implementation Framework for CFOs."
45 individuals were in attendance, including 30 members of the media.
The 76-page document offers a pragmatic action plan that addresses cybersecurity from an enterprise-wide perspective. Developed by a task force of more than sixty industry and government experts, "The Financial Management of Cyber Risk: An Implementation Framework for CFOs" has been funded and managed by the private sector and is offered as a free resource on cyber risk mitigation for organizations across the country.

ANSI Position on Protection of Copyright for Standards Referenced into Public Law

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
It has been argued by some that model codes and standards referenced into law should be available for free. ANSI believes, however, that such a position would thwart the public interest in encouraging the development of such codes and standards by private standards developing organizations, many of whom depend upon revenues derived from the sale of codes and standards to fund their activities. ANSI has created this folder in response to the numerous questions and arguments that have been raised on this subject and to provide access to the documents that best and most comprehensively articulate ANSI’s position on the importance of preserving copyright protection for codes and standards referenced into law.
